Teppan Edo Review: A Culinary Journey in Disney's Japan Pavilion at Epcot

Whenever I'm craving Japanese food at Walt Disney World, I visit my go-to restaurant, Teppan Edo. Not only is the food at Teppan Edo fresh and delicious, but the hospitality, decor, and ambiance provide a memorable dining experience for the entire family to enjoy.

Teppan Edo Overview

Teppan Edo is located in the Japan Pavillion at Epcot. You can find the restaurant located on the second floor of the Mitsukoshi department store. The Mitsukoshi restaurants provide a modern-day take on old-world traditions with teppan-yaki-style cooking. The Japanese word "teppan" means iron plate, "yaki" means grilled, and "Edo" is the former name of Tokyo! I'm always excited to eat at Teppan Edo. Disney describes the restaurant experience as "a feast for the senses" because the highly skilled chefs prepare your food before you at tables integrated with a hot grill. To secure a table at Teppan Edo, make your lunch or dinner reservations in advance. I highly recommend making reservations 60 days prior to your visit to Walt Disney World.

The Experience

Upon entering Teppan Edo guests are greeted by friendly cast members dressed in kimono uniforms. After checking your party in, a cast member will then guide you to your table. Each teppanyaki table seats about eight guests to honor the communal eating tradition. Usually, another party joins the table to provide a shared dining experience.

The Food

Teppan Edo's lunch and dinner menus are similar. Both offer guests appetizers, sushi, entrées, combination meals and additional food and beverage selections. I usually order miso soup as an appetizer and one of the four combination meals- Asakusa (steak and shrimp), Ueno (chicken and shrimp), Nihonbashi (steak and chicken), or Tsukiji (scallop and steak).

The chef will appear at the table about five to ten minutes after ordering your meal. The chefs are very friendly, fun, and professional. Before the cooking entertainment begins, the chef will confirm each guest's order. A ginger sauce and a white (yum yum) sauce are then presented to each guest. The sauces complement vegetables, seafood, steak, or chicken.

Next, vegetables and fried rice are prepared, which are created by a display of entertaining culinary tricks. Usually, the signature shape of Mickey Mouse is formed by a pile of fried rice or onions, which are also used to create a smoking volcano. The chef will then proceed to cook your entrée. After cleaning the grill and thanking the guests, the chef will leave the table. There's something about seeing the chef who cooks the meal that makes me more thankful for their skills and what was prepared.

I always save room for my favorite dessert at Teppan Edo, green tea ice cream! I recommend trying this delicious creamy blend of matcha green tea and ice cream. It is a nice way to end your meal before continuing your Epcot's World Showcase journey.
